Choline-PET/CT

Choline presents as a natural compound in a number of foods, and is absorbed through the intestine. After absorption, it is delivered to the blood. From protein building locks, which are contained in plant foods, it can also be produced by the body itself. Choline is involved in the formation of the cell membrane components, the so-called cell membrane phospholipids.

As with many other malignant tumors, there will also be an elevated level of choline in the cells. Radioactive choline (C 11 Choline) marked with carbon-11, can therefore in the tumor tissue of the prostate carcinoma be quantified via a nuclear detector and then be depicted by means of a positron emission tomography. C-11 choline differs from natural choline only because of its radioactive marking and does present any risk for the human organism.

Positron emission tomography (PET) monitors the biochemical functioning of cells by detecting how they process certain compounds, such as glucose (sugar). Cancer cells metabolize glucose at a much higher level than normal tissues.

The computer tomogram (CT) generates a multiplicity of radiographs and can depict the examined body section in layers. These cross-sectional images or x-ray slices of the area being studied can then be examined on a computer monitor or printed. The CT scan supplies precise data, as to where in the body tumor-like malignant growths occur. The choline PET delivers supplementing information whether these are cells with elevated choline level of tumor-suspicious areas.

In order to achieve a reliable image quality, the examination is performed with a combined PET/CT machine.

Since the 11C-choline-PET/CT procedure is still in its trial phases, the examination should only be performed selectively, such as for patients after a brachytherapy, radiation therapy or prostatectomy with increased PSA levels (PSA recurrence/biochemical recurrence) to exclude lymph node metastasis (involvement of lymph nodes) and metastization in the inner organs or in the bones.

A special advantage of the PET/CT is the examination of the entire body in one examination procedure, the avoidance of duplicate or multiple examinations, as well as the reduction of radiation exposure, and the expenditure of time.

CT-Scan/MRI

he KLINIK am RING is equipped with the high performance technical instruments and equipment for the so-called magnetic resonance imaging or diagnostic imaging:

Dr. med. Rudolf Kirchner, accredited physician for diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine: “Aside all of the technique in our area, it is for us of utmost importance that the patient feels comfortable and secure. We want to help the patient to overcome his anxiety and fear of the “tube” as well as possible radio active substances”.

Dr. Bruno Frentz, accredited physician for diagnostic radiology: "Computer tomography is a medical imaging or x-ray procedure for the imaging of bones, inner organs, cavities, muscles soft tissue, and vascular structures. Detailed cross sections and three-dimensional reproductions allow an optimal and secure therapy planning. The magnetic resonance tomography, however, does show these images without x-rays and much more precise, meaning that also infections can be recognized”.

Early Detection

THE EARLIER THE BETTER!

If prostate cancer is early regognised, the prospects for cure are very high. The early detection has therefore a substancial significance. (Early recognition of prostate cancer allows for high rates of cure.)

Take prompt precautions (Take advantage of early recognition procedures)
It is generally the case for all cancers: The probability of cure is higher the earlier the disease is
recognised. It is urgently recommended to seek out the doctor immediately in the event of all
unclear symptoms, as well as to regularly take advantage of the precautionary investigations
that are offered!(Oncologists agree: the likelihood for cure is highest when cancer is recognised early. It is urgently recommended you visit your doctor immediately should you notice unclear symptoms. It is also a good idea to regularly take advantage of precautionary investigations and preventive procedures.)

Prostate carcinoma
This most frequent male cancer is newly diagnosed in approx. 40.000 German men each year. With targeted preventive examinations, early stages of the illness (disease) can be detected and cured in over 70% of all cases. Unfortunately, so far only about 17% of men take part in such precautions (..take opportunity of preventive medical check-ups.).

The greatest certainty of (for) early detection is currently obtained (possible) with a combination of blood tests (PSA-Test), examinations with palpation( digital rectal examination), and special ultrasound examination through the rectum (rectal ultrasound examination). The
examinations are painless and last only a few minutes. If this results in a suspicion of cancer,
tissue biopsies must be taken from the prostate, which will be examined by pathologists for the
presence of tumour cells (Should the results of your examinations lead to suspicion of cancer then tissue samples of the prostate must be taken and examined by a pathologist for the presence of cancer cells.). The pathological findings, the PSA level, and the findings of the doctors during your examination will then indicate the necessity, type and extent of the treatment that is possibly required.

Again, the same applies:
The earlier the recognition, (not only) the better the prospects for cure and (but) also the simpler and gentler
the treatment that might be required.
